Conasauga Creek Trail Guide @ Wit's End

OVERVIEW

The Conasauga Creek Trail is an interpretive walk at Wit’s End in historic Conasauga. It’s an easy 3/4-1 mile long nature trail through a beautiful Appalachian valley at the confluence of 3 mountain streams that come together to form Conasauga Creek. The creek meanders through the remains of the old Scots-Irish community of Conasauga that for many years appeared on maps and atlases and supported a general store, post office, church, boarding house, sawmill and multiple moonshine stills. John McClurd owned a farm on the spot where the streams come together. Prior to the settlement of the area by the Scots-Irish in the 1840s, Conasauga was home to a Cherokee Indian settlement. Wit’s End was established on the site in 1996.

The trail has numerous scenic places to stop and linger. In addition to being a set of trail directions, this guide (and accompanying map) also provides interpretive notes about the geographical features and historical information about the landmarks along the way. A separate set of guided meditations are being developed to also go with the map. Users of this guide should not feel tethered to the words in this guide. Feel free to use as much or as little of this guide as you wish. If you are a minimalist you may just want to read “A Few Special Requests” below and then simply follow the turn by turn directions marked in underlined italics on the pages that follow.

A Note of Caution: Wit’s End is tucked into a wild mountain landscape. Watch your step and pay attention to your surroundings so you can avoid danger and find your way back.

HISTORY OF WIT’S END

While the house is well designed, tastefully decorated and very comfortable in all 4 seasons for 2 to 20+ people at a time, we feel that it’s the natural surroundings that set Wit’s End apart. For folks interested in history, the house sits on an old farm in the historic community of Conasauga, the site of a former Cherokee Indian settlement. No other homes are visible from the private 20 acre estate enhancing your feel of being away from it all.

For those who like to meander and stroll but don’t like having to get in their car, Wit’s End is perfect. This past winter we enhanced and lengthened the Conasauga Creek trail on the property. You can walk right out the front door and hop on the trail. There’s an easy 1 mile loop along the Conasauga Creek and the three streams that feed into it. We even have maps and printed trail guides to help you make the most of it. In addition the trails on the property link to longer adventures, like the Pinhoti Trail, beyond the borders of the property.

The forest service roads that depart from the property heading deeper into the mountains are beautiful in their own right and link to all kinds of hiking and biking in the Chattahoochee NFS and Cohutta Wilderness, all of which are just a few short miles from Wit’s End. The popular Pinhoti Trailhead is just a 1000 foot walk or ride up the gravel road. Fort Mountain State Park (paddle boats, canoes, swimming beach, putt-putt, and hiking) and Fort Mountain Stables are close as well. Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Get-a-way (two miles) is a neat place to check out.

Getting around
Wit’s End is located 10 miles from downtown Ellijay where the paved road ends and the gravel forest service roads begin. An automobile is required to get you to our door and to other attractions in the region. However, once you’re here your own two feet or a mountain bike are all you need to enjoy the area around Wit’s End.
